Event Bio: Skagit Flats Ultra Marathons Makes a Comeback
The Skagit Flats Ultra Marathons, started in 1979 by the late Dallas Kloke and continued for several years by Jim Taylor and Stanley Nakashima, is back by popular demand. This completely flat 4.9 mile loop is exactly the same as the old course. The dog leg required to make a certified five mile course has been moved to a new dead end road to facilitate safety. The course Starts at the Senior Center and heads directly into four miles of farmland. The brief venture back into the residential area at the end of the loop has very little traffic.
Pearson's Athletic Club has a trio of distance races planned with certified courses, plenty of aid stations, and nice awards for your efforts. The goal is to create an event that distance runners can look forward to each year.
Course: 5 mile loops! Start on W. Hazel near the Mt. Vernon Senior Center. Run east to Dike Road and turn right. Follow Dike to around the 2.25 mile mark and turn left onto Britt Road and continue to around 4.1 miles and turn right onto Blackburn. Less than half a mile later, turn left onto Cleveland Avenue for a few blocks before turning left back onto W. Hazel. The loop is just short of five miles, so a short trip down a dead end road will be included in each lap and will be properly identified here after we get the course certified. One mile of this virtually flat course is in a residential area, while the remainder is on country roads.
